Spatial tech reading
There will be more readings to come before the week but I promise I will make them interesting.The Destination Spatial website is an Australian resource aimed at students, parents and teachers. There is info on what spatial is all about as well as study options, career info and testimonials and examples of day to day life in the industry.
To get you going, do you think you could acquire The Knowledge? Also, how that supercomputer in your hand is changing the face of mapping.

17/09 Is cartography dead? Some interesting points on the thinking behind creating maps and how that will change....or will it? Also, what should we call this place? It was named after the Earl of Stradbroke, who seemingly never set foot on the island. Should we revert to the traditional name?

I really like the Geospatial Revolution videos as a starting point for students on spatial technologies. Check out how they are used in climate science and in helping feed the world. There are plenty more on the website.We will be using Google's My Maps tool a fair bit during the week so watch this video to get your head around the basics of creating maps with Google My Maps. The easiest way to get to My Maps is to just go to Google Maps, sign in with your Google Account (Gmail account) and find My Maps in the menu - the video goes a different way.
Task - Sunday night
- In groups, you will be allocated one of the three settlements on the island. Your group will interpret geographic information on one of the three settlements to make some predictions on what that settlement looks like.
- Your group will then prepare and give a short presentation on your assigned settlement. Feel free to present to your group in any format you deem suitable (be creative!) but some simple mapping tools include:

Use the resources at the top of this page as well as the usual suspects (i.e. Wikipedia and your favourite search engine).The Australian Bureau of Statistics QuickStats site will give you some good demographic data for your settlement.
